After a lifetime of antiquin', junkin' and pickin', JoAnne Snook decided to set up her own in-home shop "Dagaz and Co.", which featured her upcycled finds with a creative and artistic flare. She started selling her creations at craft fairs, local markets and to antique dealers. JoAnne expanded into antiquing for herself, gaining respect amoung her peers, and decided to open a new shop, The Heckled Hen Antiques.
The first store opened in 2000, and was located in the Village of Manlius, New York. Recently joined by her daughter, Samantha Herron, as her business partner, these two ladies run 2 locations as well as 2 online stores. With over 7200 sq. ft. of ecelctic and funky items! The main location at 107 Fairgrounds Drive, in Manlius, New York and our booth at The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseeds, 3402 Erieville, New York.
Everyone who parades through our door asks the same thing, 'What's with the Heckled Hen name?'
It all started when JoAnne applied for a store licence, every name she could think of was taken, every single one. She felt a bit heckled. The 'Hen' part comes from her childhood home, Ahoskie, North Carolina, where they host an Annual Chicken Festival, which sparked the comedic combination for the namesake of the store!
When it comes to choosing items for our store, we always start with local dealers and artisans. Beyond that, we stick mainly to items made in the USA or Fair Trade goods from around the world. Of course, we are willing to ship anywhere, including internationally, so even if you move to Bali, we'll get you that vintage Pyrex you wrote down in our Wish Book!
